Inspired or copied? Laapataa Ladies sparks controversy over similarities with 2019 Arabic film

Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies, which was India’s official entry to the Oscars, is now embroiled in a plagiarism controversy after a viral video highlighted its resemblance to the 2019 Arabic short film Burqa City. Social media users pointed out striking similarities between the two films, particularly in the core plotline of a newlywed man searching for his wife after she is mistakenly swapped with another burqa-clad woman.

The controversy gained traction after a clip comparing scenes from both films went viral. Fans took to social media, questioning whether Laapataa Ladies was an original creation or simply an adaptation of Burqa City. While some argued that the similarities were coincidental or inspired, others accused Rao of direct plagiarism. The debate intensified due to the film’s recognition on an international stage, with many stating that proper acknowledgment of source material is essential.

A section of viewers defended Rao, emphasizing that Laapataa Ladies explored broader themes of patriarchy, identity loss, and societal norms, which are universal in storytelling. "Even if inspired, it brings an important message to Indian cinema," wrote a social media user. However, critics remained skeptical, pointing out that a similar plagiarism claim had surfaced in 2024 when actor-director Ananth Mahadevan alleged that Laapataa Ladies bore resemblance to his 1999 film Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol, which also featured a bride mix-up scenario.

Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, Laapataa Ladies was released in theatres on March 1, 2024, starring Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, and Sparsh Shrivastava. Set in rural India in 2001, it narrates the journey of two brides who are accidentally swapped during a train journey. While their husbands set out on a frantic search, the film unfolds an intriguing narrative of self-discovery and societal expectations.

Despite a lukewarm box office performance, the film found renewed popularity after its release on Netflix, earning critical acclaim. However, the ongoing plagiarism allegations cast a shadow over its success. Open discussions continue on whether it is an original take on a universal theme or a direct adaptation of an earlier work.

As debates rage on, neither Kiran Rao nor the film’s production team has issued an official statement addressing the plagiarism claims. Whether the controversy will affect the film’s reputation or its standing at international film circuits remains to be seen.
